A REGIONAL ECONOMETRIC MODEL OF U.S. APPLE SUPPLY AND DEMAND AgEcon
Roosen, Jutta.
An econometric model of U.S. apple supply and demand is estimated using annual data for 1971-1997. Supply is arranged into four geographical regions, the Northwest, the Southwest, the Central, and the East. The structural model consists of five components: supply, allocation between fresh and processed utilization, pricing, demand and net imports. Estimated supply elasticities illustrate regional differences in growers' ability to respond to market changes.

Advances in Apple Transformation Technology to Confer Resistance to Fungal Diseases in Apple Crops: A Chilean Perspective Chilean J. Agric. Res.
Polanco,Víctor; Paredes,Mario; Becerra,Viviana; Pérez,Eduardo.
Apple (Malus domestica Borkh.) is one of the most consumed fruit in the world. Genetic transformation is a key process to sustain this demand by permitting the potential enhancement of existing cultivars as well as the development of new cultivars resistant to pests, diseases, and storage problems that occur in the major production areas. This review summarizes the advances of genetic engineering applied to the development of resistant apple cultivars to fungus disease, with particular attention in the generation of apples resistant to Venturia inaequalis (Cooke) G.Winter, the main phytosanitary problem that affects apple crops in Chile.

Body mass and wing geometric morphology of the codling moth (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae) according to sex, location and host plant in the region of Maule, Chile Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Torres,Fabiola; Rodríguez,Marcela A; Lavandero,Blas; Fuentes-Contreras,Eduardo.
Codling moth, Cydia pomonella (L.) (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae), is the key pest of apple and walnut production worldwide. Among other variables, successful management of this pest is dependent on adult dispersal at the local scale. Body mass and wing geometric morphology were evaluated on female and male codling moth adults collected from apple and walnut trees in three localities of the Region of Maule. Codling moth adults were obtained by rearing diapausing larvae collected from the field. Newly emerged adults were killed, and the total dry weight, thorax weight and abdomen weight were calculated. The wings were cleared and mounted for morphometric analyses: 15 and 11 characteristics of the fore and hind wings, respectively, were measured, including the...

Schäfer,Tina; Hanke,Magda-Viola; Flachowsky,Henryk; König,Stephan; Peil,Andreas; Kaldorf,Michael; Polle,Andrea; Buscot,François.
This study investigated the impact of constitutively expressed Trichoderma atroviride genes encoding exochitinase nag70 or endochitinase ech42 in transgenic lines of the apple cultivar Pinova on the symbiosis with arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF). We compared the exo- and endochitinase activities of leaves and roots from non-transgenic Pinova and the transgenic lines T386 and T389. Local and systemic effects were examined using own-rooted trees and trees grafted onto rootstock M9. Scab susceptibility was also assessed in own-rooted and grafted trees. AMF root colonization was assessed microscopically in the roots of apple trees cultivated in pots with artificial substrate and inoculated with the AMF Glomus intraradices and Glomus mosseae. Own-rooted...

EFFECTS OF THIDIAZURON (TDZ) ON FRUITING OF TEMPERATE TREE FRUITS Rev. Bras. Frutic.
PETRI,JOSÉ LUÍS; SCHUCK,ENIO; LEITE,GABRIEL BERENHAUSER.
Thidiazuron (TDZ) is a phenylurea like citokinin on cell division fruit growth and fruit shape in some deciduous fruit trees. The effects of TDZ applied during flowering on apple cultivars 'Gala' and 'Fuji" were evaluated during seven growing seasons with annual applications on the same trees. The effects on pear and kiwi fruit trees were also evaluated. Every year, TDZ significantly increased fruit set and fruit weight on apple trees. The seven-year average of the fruit set from TDZ at 10 mg.L-1 was 112.7% while the control was only 51.3%. TDZ did not affect the number of clusters. The fruit weight increased 7.0% and 18.3% when the trees were sprayed with TDZ at 10 mg.L-1 and 5 mg.L-1, respectively. TDZ also increased fruit yield per tree by 28.7% and...

Evaluation of the uniformity and stability of T-DNA integration and gene expression in transgenic apple plants Electron. J. Biotechnol.
Flachowsky,Henryk; Riedel,Marko; Reim,Stefanie; Hanke,Magda-Viola.
The generation of transgenic apple plants relies on the molecular analysis of transgene integration and expression based on polymerase chain reaction (PCR) analysis, blotting techniques and enzymatic assays on vitro leaves of putative transgenic regenerates. In order to assess the uniformity and the stability of transfer DNA (T-DNA) integration and gene expression, we studied 26 transgenic apple lines carrying the attacin E gene from Hyalophora cecropia, the β-glucuronidase gene, and the nptII gene. Plants were evaluated using standard molecular techniques, such as PCR, Southern blot, reverse transcription PCR (RT-PCR) and Enzyme Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA), and propagated in vitro on non-selective antibiotic-free media for four years to...

Extracción de pectina a partir de manzana (Malus pumila), cv. Pink Lady Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Loyola,Nelson; Pavéz,Paula; Lillo,Sergio.
The present study extracted pectin from Pink Lady apples (Malus pumila), which present at physiological maturity an average 50% of red-color coverage, to assess whether this variety is characterized by a high (HM) or low methoxyl value (LM). The raw materials were obtained from the Marengo farm, Los Niches, Curicó province, in the south-central region of Chile. Acid hydrolysis was used and the material was then subjected to sensory analysis, evaluating the organoleptic characteristics of pectin. The pectin was extracted with citric acid, which was tested under three pH conditions (2.5, 3.0 and 3.5, the latter corresponding to the natural pH of apples) for 60 and 90 min and subjected to a constant temperature of 90 °C. The degree of esterification (DE) of...

Extraction model of low methoxyl pectin from apple pomace effects of acid concentration and time on the process and the product BABT
Fertonani,Heloísa Cristina Ramos; Scabio,Ardalla; Carneiro,Eliana Beleski Borba; Schemim,Maria Helene Canteri; Nogueira,Alessandro; Wosiacki,Gilvan.
In Brazil, one of the top apple producing countries in the world, apple processing is an increasing activity, with pomace as the main by-product. To extract pectin from pomace, factors affecting process and product should be studied for optimization. A model to produce LMP directly from dried apple pomace was established observing the effects of HNO3 concentration and the time of reaction at 97ºC, analyzed from a statistical and practical point of view. The model for gravimetric yield (R² =0.9834) predicts the highest value of 20.07 g/100 g (126 mM; 14.07 min) of a pectin with a degree of esterification of 48.49%. The model for degree of esterification of extracted pectin (R²= 0.9797) predicts the lowest value of 43.73% (200 mM; 10.07 min) with a yield of...

Influence of ethanol concentration, addition of spices extract, and level of sweetness on physico-chemical characteristics and sensory quality of apple vermouth BABT
Joshi,Vinod K.; Sandhu,Danwant K..
The composition of apple base wine was found to be suitable for conversion into vermouth. The spices extract contained more TSS, tannins, esters, volatile acid but lower titrable acid than apple base wine. To optimize and develop apple vermouth with different ethanol concentrations (12%, 15%, 18%), sugar content (4%, 8%) and spices extract (2.5% and 5.0%) was prepared and was evaluated. Significant differences in physico-chemical characteristics and sensory quality amongst the vermouths having different levels of alcohol, sugar and spices extract were noted. Generally, increasing ethanol content decreased titrable acidity, tannins, macroelements and colour units while micro-elements, viscosity and total esters were increased. Increased sugar level affected...

Pear (Pyrus communis), which is intensively cultivated in subtropical and temperate climates, has recently attained the 3rd position in the world fruit ranking, just after apple and peach. This fruit exhibits certain similarities to apple with respect to the pulp, but pear is used as a raw material only when apple is no longer available, which suggests that the same technology line may be utilized. Both fruits do have processing compatibilities, and it is permissible to add pear juice to apple juice at levels defined by law. Quality indicators, such as pH, total acidity, total phenolic compounds and antioxidant activity were used. The simple sugar analysis clearly defines fructose as the main component in pear juice, and lower figures were found when...

Morphological and physiological photon flux influence under in vitro culture of apple shoots BABT
Zanandrea,Ilisandra; Bacarin,Marcos Antonio; Braga,Eugenia Jacira Bolacel; Bianchi,Valmor João; Peters,José Antonio.
The aim of the present study was to evaluate the growth and development of apple rootstock shoots submitted to different photon flux densities (7, 14, 21 and 60 µmol m-2 s-1) and three culture media. The best photon flux for maximizing growth, number of shoots and leaves was 14 µmol m-2 s-1, which also resulted in the highest values of chloroplastic pigments. On the other hand, the highest photon flux (60 µmol m-2 s-1) decreased significantly these parameters. Medium with reduced sucrose concentration did not affect the analyzed parameters, enabling an efficient multiplication of the cultivar with only 1% of sucrose.

Osmo-dehydrated functional product containing fructo-oligosaccharides: physical, chemical and sensorial characteristics BABT
Egea,Mariana Buranelo; Borsato,Dionísio; Silva,Rui Sérgio dos Santos Ferreira da; Yamashita,Fabio.
The objective of the present study was to develop a functional product from the osmo-dehydrated Fuji apple incorporating FOS with acceptable physical, chemical and sensorial characteristics and potential for commercial-scale production. Some treatments were discarded due to texture and water activity that did not reach the desired quality parameters. The products submitted to the osmo-dehydration treatments presented a greater vitamin C loss. All the treatments obtained sensory scores of 6 in a 9 points scale for all the attributes, except the crispness, indicating good acceptance. The sensory scores and incorporated FOS quantities indicated that the osmo-dehydrated apple products have potential for commercial-scale production.

Oviposition Behavior of Ceratitis capitata Wiedemann (Diptera: Tephritidae): Association Between Oviposition Preference and Larval Performance in Individual Females Neotropical Entomology
JOACHIM-BRAVO,IARA S.; FERNANDES,ODAIR A.; BORTOLI,SÉRGIO A. DE; ZUCOLOTO,FERNANDO S..
The oviposition preference and larval performance of females of Ceratitis capitata (Wiedemann) were examined. Wild or laboratory-reared females were tested for oviposition preference in relation to papaya fruit in different stages of ripeness, as well as to two different fruits: papaya and apple. The results demonstrated that both laboratory-reared and wild females preferred ripe papaya fruit compared to unripe fruit for oviposition, and that ripe papaya was the best for larval performance. When oviposition preference was tested with different fruits (papaya and apple), both wild and laboratory-reared larvae developed better in papaya. However, only wild females showed a preference for oviposition on papaya as opposed to apple. Laboratory-reared females...

Patulin accumulation in apples during storage by Penicillium expansum and Penicillium griseofulvum strains BJM
Welke,Juliane Elisa; Hoeltz,Michele; Dottori,Horacio Alberto; Noll,Isa Beatriz.
A part of apples destined to juice production is generally of poor quality. Apples from cold storage or recently harvest (ground harvested or low quality apples) are stored under ambient conditions until they are processed. Since Penicillium expansum and P. griseofulvum are the principal fungal species isolated from stored apples in Brazil, the objective of this study was to investigate the ability of these strains to produce patulin in apples and report the consequences of this type of storage in loss of quality. The toxin was quantified using thin layer chromatography and charge-coupled device camera (TLC-CCD). The rate and quantities that P. expansum and P. griseofulvum can grow and produce patulin are highly dependent on the fungal strain and time....
